Abstract
Natural products have recently become the focus of increased research interest, due to their potential for pharmacological activities. In this paper, we report on the anticancer activities of methanolic extracts from Artemisia argyi (AAM) against HT-29 human colon cancer cells. The primary objective of this study was to determine the mechanisms inherent in AAM-induced cytotoxicity and apoptosis in HT-29 cells. We found that AAM induced cytotoxicity in a dose-dependent manner, as determined by the results of an MTT reduction assay, an LDH release assay, and a colony formation assay. As expected, AAM induced characteristic apoptosis signs in HT-29 cells, including apoptotic body and sub-G1 DNA content via Hoechst staining and flow cytometric analysis. These results indicate that AAM may contains bioactive materials and potential candidates as a chemotherapeutic agent in human colon cancer cells.
